Beat the '76-plate discounts - save big on a nearly-new car
Friday, Aug 28, 2026 12:00 PM
motorpoint used cars jh 14 Dealers will be shifting as many new cars as they can as the new '76' plate comes in

Dealers will be focusing all their efforts on shifting new cars in September, offering bumper deals, including, in some cases, double-digit discounts. So where does that leave nearly new vehicles, whose chief attraction is their new car feel at lower prices?

We compared the prices of three nearly new cars chosen at random and advertised by car supermarket Motorpoint with their new equivalents, whose prices have been slashed by main dealers. You can see the results below but, in short, the nearly new car still comes out cheapest, with the Ford Explorer bringing the biggest saving on the discounted dealer price (35%), followed by the Jaecoo 7 (16%) and the Peugeot 208 (13%).

Two of our nearly new examples have done very little mileage and are just one year old. However, that's not always the case with nearly new cars, and many aren't the latest models. Also, price savings aren't the whole story. For example, Ford is offering 0% finance compared with Motorpoint's 10.9%. Determined new car buyers can negotiate free extras and upgrades too.

Ian Mansfield, head of buying at Motorpoint, accepts new car deals can be tempting. "With manufacturers and dealers putting a lot of effort into making brand-new cars attractive to buyers, it's unsurprising that people might be tempted by the offers available," he says. "We would always suggest motorists run the numbers to make sure that they are getting the best deal possible, while being mindful of how quickly a brand-new car will depreciate.

"The September plate change is one of the best opportunities we have to source nearly new stock. This is great news for motorists as there will be lots of choice when it comes to getting a car that looks and feels new without the price tag."
