Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50: Our fastest FWD road test yet

Most powerful series-production GTI in five decades brings special axle hardware and a clearer track focus It comes almost as a surprise that the Golf GTI is 50 years old. So popular – so damned omnipresent – has this versatile car been on the hot hatch scene that the passing of time goes unnoticed. The Golf GTI turning 50 is almost like turning 50 yourself: faintly incomprehensible.But here we are, and to celebrate the milestone Volkswagen has seen fit to unleash a special edition. Not that we didn’t see this coming. Big birthdays for the world’s favourite hot hatch have been celebrated in five-year increments more or less since the Mk3 GTI 20th Anniversary, which was marked out by split-rim BBS alloys, questionable seat trim and, frankly, not a lot in the way of the mechanical enhancements.The anniversary treatment escalated somewhat in subsequent years. These cars have at various points gained special suspension tuning, bigger turbochargers, overboost functions, titanium exhaust plumbing and non-trivial aerodynamic enhancements, all of which has led to this week’s road test subject, the GTI Edition 50. This car’s claim to fame is rather more impactful than any single modification over the standard GTI, because VW claims it is the quickest front-drive production car ever to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with a time of 7min 44.5sec.That the Edition 50 steals the crown from the FL5-generation Honda Civic Type R by around three-tenths of a second is largely irrelevant. What matters is that VW sees this car as being part of the same conversation as its Japanese opponent, and has gone to the trouble of setting a challenging new benchmark to make the point. But strip away the numbers and is the Edition 50 really as dynamically capable as the Honda? We’ll find out shortly. If it is, you can bet that once the lineage has been electrified or perhaps disappeared entirely, these cars will be among the most sought-after GTIs of them all.
