Cadillac made a surprise announcement on the eve of the 2019 Detroit Auto Show by debuting its first fully electric vehicle.

It has no name and there are no details about the vehicle, except that it uses a unique and specialized platform that’s been designed from the ground up to be used for EVs.

“Cadillac’s EV will hit the heart of the crossover market and meet the needs of customers around the world,” said Steve Carlisle, president of Cadillac. “It will represent the height of luxury and innovation while positioning Cadillac as the pinnacle of mobility.”

This announcement comes on the heels of the automaker’s new XT6 three-row crossover, but this is an arguably more important debut. The automaker says that a variety of body styles can be spun off this architecture, including  front-, rear- or all-wheel drive cars.

Cadillac boasts that the most advanced components of this vehicle is the battery cells and drive units, although that boast falls flat since there’s no other information to be shared, not even power output or expected driving range. All these details and more should be expected closer to its launch, another timeframe that’s fairly anonymous.

However, Cadillac will introduce new models at the rate of roughly one every six months through 2021, so we should get some information soon. It’s been reported that Cadillac will be GM’s lead EV-focused brand in the near future.
